Product description:
Since the introduction of the CORE in the spring of 2019, a steadily growing community of pilots has emerged who no longer want to do without the benefits of this unique remote control system. Extremely simple programming—even for complex models—redundant battery and radio design, and great future potential have made an impression on the market shortly after the launch.
A highly motivated development team is continuously working on enhancements and improvements. Customer requests are also constantly taken into account to achieve maximum performance. Every transmitter is custom-built and tested by hand at our facility in Donauwörth. This means design, development, and manufacturing are all under one roof—truly “Made in Germany.”
Radio Transmission
The radio link utilizes a highly effective frequency-hopping technique in the 2.4 GHz band. A range of over 9 km is unique in the market and provides maximum system reserves, which are essential for maximum reliability, especially under difficult conditions.
The CORE features a redundant radio link design, which is monitored by the receiver. A malfunction in a transmitter unit can be immediately signaled by the receiver via telemetry. Its reliability and immunity to interference have already been proven at several major events—even under the most adverse RF conditions, you can rely on the CORE.
Power Supply
The CORE’s power supply is designed with redundancy. This means that two separate Li-ion battery units, each with 3400mAh/7.2V, and the entire voltage regulation system are installed in duplicate—a feature currently unique to the CORE. This enables a runtime of approximately 8 hours at full screen brightness and maximum system load.
Fast Signal Transmission
The CORE has 26 channels, each with 4096-bit resolution. Control data is transmitted without delay in a 10 ms frame rate. All channels have full resolution, and there are no restrictions regarding the frame rate.
Telemetry
Since telemetry is already indispensable in any model and will continue to gain importance in the coming years, this topic was given priority.
Telemetry handling and transmission have been completely redesigned, allowing up to 250 sensors, each with 32 data points, to be connected to the P²BUS and transmitting up to 800 16-bit values per second. This opens up entirely new possibilities for the future, such as real-time servo monitoring in the model.
Powerbox Systems has since developed its own telemetry sensors that can be plugged into the P²BUS via Plug n’ Play. However, the P²BUS telemetry interface is also open to third-party providers who already offer software updates for their existing sensors. The customer simply needs to install a software update and can continue using their existing sensors without any issues.
The configuration and parameterization of the entire telemetry system is conveniently carried out via the transmitter using a 2.4 GHz radio link.
Linux with smartphone features
A modern, powerful Linux industrial PC is built into the CORE.
Operation is exclusively via the touchscreen. The methodology and feel are the same as with a smartphone. Combined with an intuitive user interface that allows quick access to all related settings, programming a model is accomplished with just a few inputs.
The user interface was programmed entirely using the Qt toolkit. This development environment is virtually the standard in the embedded GUI sector today and is used by many well-known manufacturers.
The display used is manufactured according to PowerBox-Systems’ specifications and remains highly legible even in direct sunlight.
To operate the capacitive touchpad, a light tap on the surface is sufficient. The smart keys (shortcut keys) located at the bottom of the screen enable quick access to important functions such as the servo monitor and screen lock.
Internal data communication is implemented via CAN-BUS. This bus system is ideally suited for our application and has been successfully used in the automotive and aviation sectors for many decades. Proof of our system’s fast processing can be found in the servo monitor: The responsiveness of the display to the control movements performed by the encoders is absolutely in real time! The Linux computer’s existing OpenGL support leaves nothing to be desired in terms of graphics, even for the future.
Features
The two sticks, milled from solid stock, are mounted on four ball bearings and sample every control input with 16-bit resolution. These 65,535 steps are transmitted digitally and without loss to a powerful digital signal processor, which then handles the signal processing. Four additional linear encoders—two on the sides and two on top—are also equipped with Hall sensors and each feature dual ball bearings, ensuring that the entire CORE operates completely wear-free.
The transmitter is essentially fully equipped—with the exception of the joystick switches. Each transmitter is individually manufactured at the factory according to customer specifications. Joystick switches, safety switches, and a wide selection of other switch types can be installed at the factory or retrofitted during service. The easy accessibility of the switches also allows for hassle-free replacement by the customer.
Not to be overlooked are the four push-button switches on the left and right, next to and below the sticks. These are perfectly suited as actuators for the wheel brake, electric starter, or smoke pump and can be accessed without releasing the control stick.
Look and Feel
When you pick up the CORE, you immediately feel at home: All switches are arranged exactly as you would expect in a high-end system. The pilot is given a professional “tool” that they can handle immediately. The removable, Alcantara-covered grips not only look elegant, they also ensure a comfortable feel in the hands in every season. In addition, the transmitter’s center of gravity is perfectly balanced.
Highlights
A special feature worth mentioning is the unique voice output. While other systems require you to create audio files on a PC and then laboriously copy them to the transmitter, the CORE uses a licensed TTS (Text-to-Speech) server from Acapella. The most advanced TTS system currently available offers several different voices for each language, which can be used individually to announce telemetry values or switch positions. Upon request, a landing call from the Queen of England is included!
Another unique feature of the CORE is the ability to update the receivers via the 2.4 GHz radio interface. The pilot will never again have to
have to go to great lengths to remove a receiver installed in an inaccessible location just to install a software update. A single button press is all it takes, and 30 seconds later the receiver is up to date.
Furthermore, the CORE features built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The latter will send telemetry data to a web portal, which can then be conveniently analyzed via a web browser on a smartphone or PC. Model settings and other data from the transmitter are also managed here.
To round out the hardware, a GPS and a 9-axis motion sensor are built in to keep all options open for future applications.
