PowerBox ATOM
Our ATOM remote control system sets a new standard in the upper mid-range segment. Drawing on extensive expertise from the CORE, new electronics development, customized software, a smaller Linux computer, and a redesign of the housing manufacturing process, we have created a system that is unmatched in terms of value for money.
Above all, the ingeniously simple operating concept has been adopted 1:1 from the CORE; even model files can be exchanged between ATOM and CORE. In terms of redundancy, there are no compromises—as is typical for PowerBox: both the radio system and the power supply are designed with redundancy.
Menu Structure
In the ATOM menu, just as with the CORE, the pilot encounters a freely programmable system defined primarily by functions. You won’t find special menus for mixers like Butterfly, Combiswitch, SnapRoll, or other fixed structures from the 90s in the ATOM: you simply create a function consisting of a transmitter channel and the assigned servos. Servos can be assigned to multiple functions. Examples include the two functions “Ailerons” and “Flaps,” which operate independently of each other. A third function, “Butterfly,” allows the servos already in use to be individually adjusted without altering the settings of the first two functions.
Additional menu items such as ServoCut, Differentiation, or virtual switches are also universally designed and help the pilot configure any model to their preferences in no time. A powerful tool is the easy-to-understand flight phase structure, which allows even complex tasks to be solved quickly without having to spend a long time studying the manual.
P²-BUS Telemetry
The P²-BUS, developed by PowerBox-Systems, transmits servo and telemetry data simultaneously over a single line. This simplifies wiring in the model using conventional servo cables and Uni connectors. All sensors on the P²-BUS have individual addresses, which are automatically assigned by the transmitter in case of multiple assignments. Thus, no active hubs are required for wiring the sensors in the model—all sensors are connected to the receiver via V-cables or a passive P²-Dock. All information, such as sensor names or units, is transmitted to the transmitter by all sensors when the system is powered on. This allows new sensors to be connected to the system at any time; an update of the transmitter is not necessary. In addition to the sensors available from PowerBox-Systems, there are a large number of sensor manufacturers that support the P²-BUS system.
Wireless Transmission
The radio link uses a highly effective frequency-hopping method across 66 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. A range of over 9 km is unique on the market and provides maximum system reserves, which are essential for the highest level of reliability, especially under difficult conditions. The ATOM features a redundant radio link design, which is monitored by the receiver. A malfunction in a transmitter unit can be immediately signaled by the receiver via telemetry. The reliability and immunity to interference of the PowerBox radio link have been proven in thousands of hours of operation with the CORE!
Signal Transmission
The ATOM can transmit 18 channels with 2048-bit resolution at a data rate of 10 ms. All channels are transmitted simultaneously in a single data packet. This ensures minimal latency and precision. The performance of the return channel for telemetry is also unique on the market. Up to 800 x 16-bit data packets per second can be transmitted from the model to the transmitter. Each of the 250 connectable sensors can provide 32 sensor values—a massive amount of data that is recorded in the ATOM transmitter and is available for later analysis.
Power Supply
The ATOM’s power supply is designed to be redundant. This means that two separate Li-ion battery units, each with 3400mAh/7.2V, are used, and the entire voltage regulation system is duplicated. This remains a feature currently found only in PowerBox Systems remote controls. Battery life is at least 7–8 hours, depending on screen brightness.
Operating System
The ATOM features a modern, high-performance Linux industrial PC. Operation is exclusively via the touchscreen. The methodology and feel are identical to those of a smartphone. Combined with an intuitive user interface that allows quick access to all related settings, programming a model is accomplished with just a few inputs.
The user interface was programmed entirely using the Qt toolkit. This development environment is virtually the standard in the embedded GUI sector today and is used by many well-known manufacturers.
The display used is manufactured to PowerBox-Systems’ specifications and remains highly legible even in direct sunlight. Operating the capacitive touchpad requires only a light tap on the surface. The smart keys (shortcut keys) located at the bottom of the screen enable quick access to important functions such as the servo monitor and screen lock.
Internal data communication is implemented via CAN-BUS. This bus system is ideally suited for our application and has been successfully used in the automotive and aviation sectors for many decades.
Look and Feel
When you pick up the ATOM, you immediately feel at home: All switches are arranged exactly as you would expect in a high-end system. The pilot is given a professional “tool” that they can use right away.
The removable grips, covered in microfiber fabric, not only look elegant but also ensure a comfortable feel in the hands year-round. In addition, the transmitter’s center of gravity is perfectly balanced.
Highlights
A standout feature is the unique voice output. The ATOM utilizes a licensed TTS (Text-to-Speech) server from Acapella. This state-of-the-art TTS system offers a variety of voices for each language, which can be individually selected to announce telemetry values or switch positions. There is no need for the time-consuming creation of audio files on a PC and the subsequent tedious transfer to the transmitter.
Another unique selling point of the ATOM is the ability to update receivers via the 2.4 GHz wireless interface. The pilot will never again have to go to the trouble of removing a receiver that’s installed in an inaccessible location just to install a software update. A single button press is all it takes, and the receiver is up to date 30 seconds later. Furthermore, the ATOM features an internal USB interface that enables the optional use of a Wi-Fi module. This allows updates for the transmitter or receivers to be downloaded online.
Features
The two sticks, milled from solid material, feature 4-ball bearings and scan every control input with 12-bit (4096-step) resolution.
After digital signal processing, a full 2048 steps are available. Four additional linear encoders—two on the sides and two on top—are also equipped with Hall sensors and feature double ball bearings, ensuring that the entire ATOM operates completely wear-free. Four easily accessible toggle switches on the left and right, next to and below the sticks, serve as additional encoders that are perfect for wheel brakes, electric starters, or smoke pumps.
The ATOM transmitter is delivered fully equipped as a handheld or console transmitter. Of course, built-in stick switches can be ordered as an option. The easy accessibility of the switches allows for custom switch assignment by the customer at a later date.
